Inside Lindsay Clancy’s agonizing courtroom reunion with ex-husband

Inside a Mᴀssachusetts courtroom on Monday, in what is being dubbed ‘America’s saddest trial’, the once happy couple Patrick and Lindsay Clancy were reunited.

It was the first time the two had come face-to-face since Lindsay strangled five-year-old Cora, four-year-old Dawson and eight-month-old Callan with exercise resistance bands in the basement of the family’s home in the affluent coastal suburb of Duxbury on January 24, 2023. She then slashed her wrists and neck before jumping from a second-floor window, leaving herself paralyzed from the waist down.

Sitting wheelchair-bound at the defense table, Lindsay gulped repeatedly and physically shook when she first laid eyes on her ex-husband entering the courtroom.

Patrick, dressed in a dark suit and blue tie, walked briskly through the public gallery up to the stand as the first witness to testify in the case.

His discomfort was visible as he walked past his former wife, appearing to avoid looking toward the defense table before taking his seat.

A wedding ring glinted on his left hand, a visible reminder of the life he has rebuilt in the three-and-a-half years since the deaths of the couple’s children.

The Daily Mail exclusively revealed last week how the 38-year-old software executive has remarried fertility doctor Rachel Danis after moving to New York City for a fresh start and divorcing Lindsay.

Hi ex-wife, meanwhile, has been held at Tewkesbury Hospital receiving ongoing psychiatric treatment. 

While family members including Lindsay’s parents Paula and Mike Musgrove regularly visit, Lindsay’s attorney told the Daily Mail that she had not seen Patrick since that awful day.

Monday marked the first time that Lindsay Clancy and her ex-husband had seen each other since the day of their children’s deaths

It was only when a prosecutor asked him to identify Lindsay in court that Patrick finally looked toward his former wife.

Only as he left the courtroom hours later did Patrick appear to steal a glance toward Lindsay of his own accord. 

It was impossible to tell from our position in the courtroom if their eyes met.

Throughout Monday’s testimony, Lindsay watched the father of her children speak about the life they once shared. 

At several moments, she sobbed silently.

Despite their complicated relationship, Patrick’s support for his former wife still came through in his testimony.

The 38-year-old software executive has publicly urged forgiveness, insisting in his only public comments before the trial that he ‘wasn’t married to a monster’, but ‘to someone who got sick.’

That loyalty also seeped into his testimony.

More than once, Patrick pushed back on the prosecution’s line of questioning when it became pointed, insisting that ‘context matters.’ 

Patrick’s heartbreaking recollection of the family’s final hours together capped the opening day of the high-profile trial, which is expected to last six to eight weeks.

Lindsay is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in a case that raises complex questions around postpartum mental illness and criminal responsibility.

The 35-year-old does not deny strangling her three children that tragic day. Instead, she has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, arguing that she was suffering from severe postpartum depression and psychosis at the time of the killings.

Her attorneys claim she was in the grips of psychosis, possibly exacerbated by a cocktail of up to 13 prescribed medications, and heard a man’s voice telling her to kill the children and herself because it was her ‘last chance.’

If convicted, Lindsay faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.

During Monday’s proceedings, Patrick described the final moments he spent with his children on January 24, 2023.

He remembered four-year-old Dawson eating chicken nuggets on the couch while Patrick rocked eight-month-old Callan on his knees.

He remembered kissing five-year-old Cora on the head. 

Everything, including his wife’s demeanor, was, in Patrick’s words, ‘normal.’

Before leaving their large blue-painted family home to pick up takeout for the family’s dinner, he told them: ‘Be right back.’

They would be the last words he ever said to his children.

When Patrick returned less than an hour later, just after 6pm, the life he had known had been shattered.

After going upstairs to find his wife, who he thought was giving the children a bath, he discovered their second-floor bedroom door was locked and had to force his way in.

Inside, there was blood on the floor, a bloody knife on the nightstand and the room was cold because a window had been left open.

He ran outside to find Lindsay lying barely conscious on the frozen ground beneath the second-floor window.

She had cut her wrists and neck before jumping around 20 feet into the backyard.

Patrick stayed by her side for the next 10 minutes after dialing 911, convinced that she might die before the paramedics arrived.

Only when they turned up did he hurry inside to find the children in the basement – having never imagined that his wife would have hurt them too.

Patrick testified how his wife had struggled with her recovery after the births of all of their children, particularly when it came time to return to work.

In September 2022, several months after Callan was born, Lindsay told him she planned to start taking the antidepressant Zoloft to help with anxiety and began seeing a psychiatrist.

But instead of getting better, Patrick said she slipped into a ‘more and more depressed state.’

At first, there were ‘small things’, including worrying about a family vacation and being anxious about Halloween. Then she struggled to sleep.

From October to the end of December, Patrick said she ‘kept getting worse and worse.’

During that time, she was being prescribed several medications from multiple different providers, he said.

By early December, Patrick said Lindsay’s ‘big spiral started.’

‘She started to lose a lot of weight. She became very depressed and was having a really hard time,’ he said.

That was when she first told him she felt suicidal and was having ‘intrusive thoughts’ about harming the children. 

‘She described thoughts of hurting the kids or them having some sort of ailment,’ he said.

Patrick asked her if she had a plan to hurt them but she said no. She also found the thoughts disturbing, he said.

From what he saw, Lindsay seemed ‘more concerned that something might happen’ to the children than her doing something to them. 

When Cora complained of a stomach ache, for example, Lindsay feared it could be something serious, ‘or something more dramatic than it was.’

‘I never saw Lindsay harm the kids,’ Patrick insisted.

He also described how Lindsay made multiple attempts to seek medical help, including a visit to Mᴀssachusetts General Hospital where she was allegedly told there was no need for her to become an in-patient.

Then on New Year’s Eve, with Lindsay still talking about thoughts of suicide, she voluntarily checked into McLean psychiatric hospital.

She was discharged five days later, in time to celebrate Cora’s fifth birthday.

It was when pH๏τos and videos of their children were shown in court when both Lindsay and Patrick struggled most with their emotions.

Heartbreaking footage showed loved ones singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to Cora at her birthday party.

Patrick’s earlier calm demeanor cracked as he described Cora’s love of princesses, Dawson’s obsession with Paw Patrol and Callan as simply a ‘happy baby.’

He paused repeatedly, fought back tears and reached for water as more family pH๏τographs and videos were played in court.

The tragic images showed a typical happy family going down slides at a water park in Cape Cod and playing at a science museum.

The videos – some of them lengthy – stunned the packed courtroom into silence as the roughly 100 members of the media and public filling the room watched the adorable children frozen in time.

Patrick said he had felt ‘hopeful’ during those final weeks in January 2023 because his wife finally ‘seemed to be doing better.’

Then on the day of the children’s deaths, ‘she was having one of her best days,’ he told the court.

Lindsay took Cora for an annual physical that morning, with the couple sharing heartwarming pH๏τos of their children by text while he stayed at home with Dawson and Callan.

In one image, Dawson was seen smiling with his arms proudly raised in the air, after Patrick said the little boy had ‘dressed himself completely for the very first time.’

Lindsay had responded with a pH๏τo of Cora, wearing a face mask at the doctors.

When she returned home, Patrick said he then went to work in his home office in the basement while she played with the children in the snow in the yard.

‘She seemed happy,’ Patrick said. ‘She was playing with the kids and seemed in a good mood.’

It was just before 5pm when she texted him to suggest they get a takeout.

Minutes later, he came upstairs and briefly saw his children for what would be the last time – before setting off on the short trip to pick up the takeout and get medicine from CVS.

When Patrick returns to give testimony on Wednesday, jurors are expected to hear his devastating 911 call from the moment he returned to find his wife injured and children strangled.
